to build or not to build?

joyce went with me this morning to talk to the people at trendmaker. got all the details on this house, and what it would cost to add the upgrades that we want. we went and did a walk through of the house. they are getting ready to sheetrock it on thursday. it's a gorgeous house, and it has everything on our checklist...except that it will back up to a future elementary school. i posted a poll on my facebook page questioning future resale, and it's about 50/50. just so i don't forget (because it was so funny), someone questioned why i had kids in the first place since i'm not sure about the noise, etc. um...i don't always like all the noises my kids make...why shouldn't i consider the noise i'm going to be subjected to monday-friday during school hours?
anyway, love the house, just not sure about the location. at least it's another option. i don't feel so desperate or panicked after the other incident.

  1. If I had to back up to a school, I would rather it be elementary than older grades. Surely the noise level (I'm guessing at recess) wouldn't be THAT bad, right? I sure would be tempted to go with a new build, being able to pick out upgrades and having everything brand new. I bet like living close to a busy street, you would tune out the noise. guess it *might* be an issue with re-sale down the road, but if you plan on being there at least 10 years, it would be worth it. It's a hard decision!

  2. the street that the house is on is a slightly busier street as well. all of the cul-de-sacs come off of it. i'm definitely worried about the resale of it. if i could get the trendmaker people down to what they sold the same plan for down the street, i'd definitely consider it. but they are about $20K higher. most everything that you'd consider an upgrade is standard with trendmaker which is nice. the only things we'd like to do is the little tumbled marble backsplash in the kitchen and put wood floors in the dining and study. it's highway robbery doing any upgrades through the builder, so we'd probably just do the kitchen and do the wood floors from someone else.

we're going back to the neighborhood to look at another house on saturday. it just came on the market yesterday. we'll see. i am just so torn about all of this.

  3. Whistle-whistle! Look at you, hot mama!

I never even would've thought about the school, but you're right. Have you prayed about this yet? What a blessing, that you were warned about that other house (via that uneasy gut feeling...). Hopefully you get some good inspiration about what to do! When do you need to be out of your home?
